In making Dhaka, Rafiq Azam is the master mason, directing the collective effort of people, understanding brick and concrete not just as his but also the people's language. Azam believes brick is the ideal material for Dhaka's humid climate. For him, "The brick can breath", absorbing water and then drying, adjusting itself to the season, and it can be used in any number of ways. Reinforced concrete is the other material that distinguishes the architecture of Rafiq Azam. It is his other staple in the making of Dhaka, in much the same way that reinforced concrete was the construction medium of choice, whether sculptural or through systems design.
